A new study reveals that around 201 million years ago, ancient ferns acted as the main catalyst for widespread wildfires in Europe during a mass extinction event. Volcanic eruptions led to global warming, which in turn caused the destruction of forest ecosystems. The findings are published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
