The Verkhovna Rada Passed the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine

On July 16, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the "Declaration of State Sovereignty." The document proclaimed the right of the Ukrainian nation to self-determination, establishing the supremacy of Ukrainian laws, independence, and equality in foreign relations. The declaration laid the groundwork for the formation of an independent Ukraine.
