Newborns in England to Be Screened for Spinal Muscular Atrophy Starting 2027

Starting October 2027, all newborns in England will be screened for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The initial phase will cover only 72% of newborns due to a limited number of labs conducting the tests. In response to criticism, the government plans to ensure testing is available for all newborns by October 2027.
